Before you buy Princess Cruise Travel Insurance, please take a moment to look at its cover and protection levels. Princess Cruise Travel Insurance is completely inadequate in the event of a serious illness or accident. Medical Evacuation limits are woeful. There are significantly better cruise travel insurance plans available in the wider market. We encourage any Princess Cruise customer to carefully review their options before committing to Princess Cruise Travel Insurance.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance | AardvarkCompare.com

On the plus side, Princess Cruise Travel Insurance does offer good cancellation protection in the event that a customer is unable to travel. In almost all circumstances, though, this cancellation protection will be in the form of a credit for future cruises rather than a cash payment.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance Benefits

Our cruise with Princess took us from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas. The price was $1,788 for two passengers, for five nights.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance – Standard Protection Levels

Listing of Benefits – Maximum Benefit

  • Accident Medical Expense – $10,000 per Trip
  • Dental Expenses – $1,000 per Trip
  • Baggage Delay – $500 per Trip
  • Baggage/Personal Effects – $1,500 per Trip
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains – $25,000 per Trip
  • Sickness Medical Expense – $10,000 per Trip
  • Trip Delay (en route to the Trip) – $500 per Trip*
  • Trip Delay (returning from the Trip) – $1,500 per Trip*

*Not to exceed $1,500 in the event of both pre- and post-cruise vacation trip delays.

We highlight the Princess Travel Accident Medical Expense Insurance and the Emergency Evacuation coverage levels. We believe that both are dangerously low levels of cover, and would leave a traveler at massive financial risk in the event of serious illness or accident. Later in this article we will offer further details.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance – Platinum Protection Levels

Listing of Benefits – Maximum Benefit

  • Accident Medical Expense – $20,000 per Trip
  • Dental Expenses – $1,000 per Trip
  • Baggage Delay – $500 per Trip
  • Baggage/Personal Effects – $3,000 per Trip
  • Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains – $50,000 per Trip
  • Sickness Medical Expense – $20,000 per Trip
  • Trip Delay (en route to the Trip) – $500 per Trip*
  • Trip Delay (returning from the Trip) – $1,500 per Trip*

*Not to exceed $1,500 in the event of both pre- and post-cruise vacation trip delays.

Whilst the Accident Medical Expense protection that Princess offers in its Platinum policy is better than in Standard, it too is absolutely awful. Emergency evacuation cover has also increased in Platinum, but certainly not to a level that we would advocate.

What Medical Insurance Benefits do I Need when Cruising?

Any form of travel insurance is designed to cover the financial costs of an event that we would rather not happen. Some are just frustrating – a lost bag is annoying, and relatively small amounts of money can offer reasonable compensation. Other events can be financially devastating – massive medical bills or a medical evacuation.

For cruise travel insurance to be of any effective use, it is critical that the benefits support the likely worst-case scenario. We will never recommend that a traveler take less than $100,000 of Travel Medical Insurance protection. That may seem like a lot of cover, but it is a normal level of protection offered in most comprehensive travel insurance policies. Why so high? Because traumatic injury or illness can result in significant medical expense.

International private hospitals can charge up to $3k-$4k per day. $100k is the minimum level of medical cover that we would ever wish to see a traveler take in their cruise insurance. The only time that we could consider less protection than this is if a traveler has an alternative medical insurance that will cover them overseas. Very few of us have home private health insurance that functions overseas.

Do remember that you will not be entitled to use any state medical facilities that may exist when you are overseas. Yes, countries like Mexico have good public health care systems, but they are not available to visitors and other non-residents. This means that you will pay full cost to use local private health facilities. Also, the US State Department will not offer financial support to US residents needing to pay for overseas health care – you are completely on your own.

$100k – the minimum level of travel medical insurance that we could ever recommend.

What Medical Evacuation Benefits do I Need when Cruising?

If you find yourself in a serious accident you may well need to be medically evacuated to a facility that can help you. It is not unusual for US tourists to need to be medically evacuated. Again, State Department will not help defray the financial costs of this trip. Those who suffer from the highest level of trauma may well need to be evacuated in a specialist-fit private jet, and be accompanied by an on-board medical team.

The costs of these medical evacuation trips can be extraordinary. Those who are traveling within 3-4 hours of the USA ought to have $100,000 of Medical Evacuation cover whenever they buy cruise travel insurance. When venturing further afield, higher levels of cover are recommended – $250,000 of evacuation protection should suffice.

Why Princess Cruise Medical Insurance Benefits are Awful

Based on the advice above, it is easy to see why we are so negative in our Princess Cruise Travel Insurance Review. We like that Princess uses Nationwide as an underwriting travel insurance carrier. But the cover levels that are offered are simply unacceptable. Too much risk is left with the traveler in the event that a serious illness or injury occurs.

Travel Medical Insurance

Recommended – $100k
Princess Standard – $10k
Princess Platinum – $20k

Medical Evacuation Insurance

Recommended – $100k (Nearshore); $250k (Offshore)
Princess Standard – $25k
Princess Platinum – $50k

What Alternatives Can I Find for Cruise Travel Insurance?

Luckily, the USA is home to one of the largest travel insurance markets on earth. Each year, over $3bn is spent on travel insurance. There are a good number of highly respected travel insurance carriers who offer comprehensive trip insurance policies. These insurance carriers compete against one another in terms of cover, service and price. It is possible, and advisable, to compare travel insurance policies against one another in order to find the best travel insurance for your cruise.

AardvarkCompare is the world’s leading Travel Insurance Marketplace. We work with only the finest travel insurance carriers in the US. Each of our carriers is rated at least ‘A’ by A.M. Best, in addition to having highly respected customer service. Each carrier will offer a range of travel insurance plans, with different levels of cover. As such, a traveler will be able to compare a dozen different travel insurance plans at the same time. This way, best value cruise travel insurance can be assured.

As a price protection for customers, the US has powerful anti-discrimination law in place that prevents the same travel insurance policy being sold at a different price. Because of this, we can guarantee our customers that they will not find the same trip insurance policy at a lower price.

Let’s run a quick quote and look at alternatives to Princess Cruise Travel Insurance.

AardvarkCompare Travel Insurance Options

We ran the quote through our system and returned a range of different cruise trip insurance options.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance - Aardvark Options | AardvarkCompare.com

The immediate observation is that the cheapest insurance rates that are being offered are less than half the price of Princess Cruise Travel Insurance. The Princess Standard Insurance Plan was $128, whereas we can see plans from RoamRight and International Trip Insurance for $60 and less.

Let’s take a look at the cover levels of the iTI Travel Lite Plan. It is one of our favorite low-cost travel insurances, and we often use it as a reference when making comparisons to other trip protection plans.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance – Cancellation Benefits

It is not all terrible news if you buy Princess Cruise Travel Insurance. It has pretty good cancellation benefits.

Travel Cancellation Protection is typically broken up into Basic, Work, and Any Reason.

Basic Cancellation Travel Protection

When you buy a Trip Insurance policy you will get some form of basic travel cancellation protection. It typically provides a 100% refund for a small number of reasons that include:

  • Accident, illness, or death of you, a traveling partner, business partner, or family member
  • Jury duty
  • Legal appearance
  • Traffic accident en route to airport
  • Death or hospitalization of your host at your travel destination
  • Weather
  • Bankruptcy of your travel provider

Of interest is that if you buy Princess Cruise Travel Insurance you will not have bankruptcy protection. To us, this feels unusual. Bankruptcy protection is something that is always available whenever we look at comprehensive travel insurance plans, whether the vacation is a cruise or not. Why Princess would want to omit this type of cover is confusing to us.

Here is what Princess Cancellation Protection covers:

  • Sickness, injury or death to yourself, a traveling companion, or members of either of your immediate families which is diagnosed and treated by a physician at the time your cruise vacation is terminated;
  • Involvement in a traffic accident en route to departure that causes you to miss your cruise
  • Your home is made uninhabitable by a natural disaster such as flood, earthquake, hurricane, volcano, tornado, wildfires or blizzard
  • Being called to serve jury duty or subpoena
  • You are called into active military service to provide aid or relief in response to a national disaster.

As you can see, that is a pretty skinny set of coverage. For this reason, many people wish to include Cancel for Work Reasons protection.

Work Cancellation Travel Protection

Cancel for Work Travel Insurance should protect us if we get laid off from work. It should also cover us if our previously agreed vacation is cancelled by our boss. In both circumstances we can expect a 100% refund of our non-refundable costs.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance has no Cancel for Work Reason protection at all, so please be careful if you need this type of protection.

Cancel for Any Reason Travel Protection

The greatest amount of cancellation flexibility will be found in travel insurance policies that incorporate Cancel for Any Reason. It is typically only available in the most comprehensive of trip insurance plans. As such, when you get a quote that incorporates Cancel for Any Reason you will also be getting a rate that includes the highest level of travel insurance benefits.

Cancel for Any Reason typically pays out at 75% of non-refundable costs. Not as useful as the 100% refund available on regular cancellation policies, but pretty good considering the flexibility to cancel your trip without any reason at all.

Now, Princess does something a little unusual. It offers Cancel for Any Reason Protection that provides a credit, rather than cash. We always prefer cash, as credit towards a future cruise may not get used.

However, Princess Cruise Travel Insurance Cancel for Any Reason benefit is 100% on the Platinum Policy. That is most unusual. Certainly, this is a considerable benefit.
The Princess Standard Protection pays out at 75%.

Here is the policy wording for Standard Protection.

Princess Cruise Special Vacation Protection Cancellation Enhancement

Vacation Protection “ANY REASON” Travel Credits

Up to 75% of the non-refundable prepaid Cruise Vacation Cost Provided by Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours.

In the event that you choose to cancel for a reason not authorized above or for a reason that is otherwise restricted, at any time up until departure, and you have purchased Vacation Protection, Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours will provide you a travel credit equal to 75% of the non-refundable value of your cruise vacation prepaid to Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours, for your use toward a future cruise vacation.

This additional enhancement is offered by Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours as a special service to guests that purchase this ticket contract Cancellation Fee Waiver Program Addendum and is available only if purchased prior to final payment (for the cruise vacation).

Certain restrictions on the use of these travel credits (such as blackout periods) may apply. To be eligible for credits, notification of cancellation must be given to Princess Cruises and/or Princess Tours prior to the ship’s departure

Princess Platinum Cruise Protection has the same policy language, but the payout figure reads as 100%.

Alternative Cancel for Any Reason Travel Insurance Protection

Cancel for Any Reason is only available in the most comprehensive trip insurance policies. Let’s look at some options so as to compare with the Princess Travel Insurance cover.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance - Cancel for Any Reason | AardvarkCompare.com

The iTI Travel LX and Travel Insured International Worldwide Trip Protector Plus  both include Cancel for Any Reason protection. This cover is preferable in that it returns cash to a traveler, rather than credit.

Remember that Princess looked to charge:

Princess Standard: $128
Princess Platinum: $192

iTI charges at $162, TII at $150 – a little less expensive than Princess Platinum, and a little more expensive than Princess Standard.

But, look at the cover levels included in the Cancel for Any Reason policies. We will use the TII Worldwide Trip Protector Plus as a reference.

TII Worldwide Trip Protector Plus

Time-Sensitive Benefits

  • Cancel for Any Reason: 75% refund
  • Cancel for Work Reason: 100% refund
  • Pre-Existing Waiver: Yes
  • Time-Sensitive Period: 21 days
  • Free-Look Period: 14 days
  • Pre-Existing Look-Back: 60 days

Regular Benefits

  • Medical Cover: Primary
  • Hospital of Choice: Yes
  • Covered Cancellation: 100% refund
  • Financial Default: Yes
  • Medical Sickness: $100,000
  • Medical Evacuation: $1,000,000

TII Medical Evacuation is $1m, versus $50k for Princess Platinum.
TII Medical Insurance is $100k, versus $20k for Princess Platinum.

And for those who want even higher levels of Medical Cover, the iTI Travel LX plan delivers $500k in Travel Medical Insurance protection.

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance – Conclusion

Princess Cruise Travel Insurance has far too little medical and evacuation protection to be credible. Travelers must ensure that they have higher levels of cover in place in order to be adequately covered.

The Princess Cruise Cancel for Any Reason protection is pretty clever, but only returns credit rather than cash. Our preference would be to take a true Cancel for Any Reason Trip Insurance policy that incorporates much higher levels of medical insurance and evacuation benefits as well.

I Panicked When I Discovered
I panicked when I discovered the Travel Insurance I had through Expedia had expired when I changed my flight reservation.
When I went to renew I was told I couldn’t.
I discovered Aardvark on my AARP site and I was excited I could purchase an even better travel plan with cover starting with my trip departure, at a cost I could afford.
I was confused with the initial site and Mr. Breeze reached out to me for clarification.
He explained the policy more thoroughly and addressed all my concerns, can’t get any better than that!
Thank You Aardvark and thank you Jonathan for your assistance.
I can go on my trip now knowing I’ll be covered for medical emergencies and then some.

Good Choices, Well Explained
I liked the way insurance was explained. I had read an article your company had written explaining Expedia trip cover versus other choices.
I used this advice to make the best choice for me and my traveling companions. That choice was to take a policy that provided much better medical and evacuation primary care.
Your site allowed comparisons, and I think I got the best value for my money. I don’t like constant follow up emails, though. You could back off a bit!!
