What does Trip Insurance Cover?
Travelers will frequently be offered Trip Insurance. They should always ask themselves – What does Trip Insurance cover?
Let’s take a look at some of the typical benefits that we see in our plans from the trip insurance carriers we work with at AardvarkCompare.
We suggest that when you travel, you should consider travel insurance. You can get an anonymous quote in seconds, and compare dozens of the top travel plans from many of the largest US travel insurers, saving you time and money finding the right travel plan for your needs.
Remember that each plan will be slightly different, and will have different cover levels. But once you know what is available, you ought to be able to see what covers works best for you.
What does Trip Insurance Cover? – Silver, Gold or Platinum?
In order to make life easier for travelers, almost every Travel Insurance Carrier will offer three different policies for travelers to choose from. Think of them as Silver, Gold or Platinum. In fact, some trip insurance companies name their policies in exactly that way – AIG Travel Guard is a great example.
Why does this matter? If you need a very basic level of cover, Silver is perfect.
Most people – in our experience around 70% of all customers – buy a Gold policy. If you have no real idea what you are looking for, then trust the wisdom of the crowd. Choose the middle of the three in every coverage group from one of our insurance carriers and you will have a solid policy.
Finally, a Platinum policy is suitable for someone who wants an enhanced level of cover. Typically, this is increased medical cover and evacuation cover. Finally, we see Cancel for Any Reason coverage incorporated into Platinum policies. This is an essential cover if a traveler wishes to use trip insurance to turn a Non-Refundable airline ticket into one with Refundable benefits. We have called this the Airline Ticket Hack.
What does Trip Insurance Cover? – Benefits
100% Trip Cost | Trip Cancellation: Reimburses forfeited, non-refundable, unused payments or deposits for trips that are canceled prior to the scheduled departure date.
Trip Cost | Trip Interruption: Reimburses forfeited, non-refundable, unused payments or deposits for trips that are interrupted after the scheduled departure date.
Trip Interruption – Return Air Only: Reimburses the additional airline transportation expenses incurred by you to reach the return destination for trip interruptions.
Trip Delay: Reimburses for reasonable additional expenses if the insured is delayed for more than five consecutive hours due to a covered reason.
Missed Connection: Reimburses if Inclement Weather or Common Carrier causes cancellation or a delay of regularly scheduled airline flights for three or more hours to your point of departure.
Baggage & Personal Effects: Can reimburse you if your baggage or personal effects are lost, stolen or damaged while on your Trip.
Baggage Delay: If your Baggage is delayed more than 12 hours, you can be reimbursed for the purchase of Necessary Personal Effects.
Accident Sickness Medical Expense*: Pays for necessary medical expenses due to Injury or Sickness incurred within one year of the date of the Injury or Sickness. Initial treatment must be received during Trip. Pays for emergency dental expenses during the trip due to injury to sound, natural teeth while on the trip. Covers medical and surgical treatment by a licensed physician; professional nursing, hospital, X-ray and ambulance services within one year of the Injury or Sickness provided initial treatment was received during the trip.
Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation of Remains*: Covers evacuation and transportation as directed by a Physician to the nearest adequate medical facility (home in the event of death or if medically required). Pays for special medical escort if recommended in writing by the attending Physician.
Accidental Death & Dismemberment: Pays for loss of life or limb if it occurs within 365 days of an accident during your Trip.
Cancel for Any Reason: Will reimburse 50% of nonrefundable expenses if you cancel your Trip for any reason, up to 48 hours prior to your departure. (Cancel for any Reason can only be purchased at the time the base plan is purchased and within 15 days of initial trip payment. Cover must be purchased for the full cost of trip.)
(when cover is purchased within 15 days of Initial Trip payment).
Note the time limit. It is critical to buy your trip insurance very soon after your initial trip deposit. 15 days is normal. In doing so, you will receive additional cover. If you are late with your trip insurance, then this additional cover will simply not apply. This always seems like a real waste – getting less benefit for your money, simply because of a late purchase of travel insurance.

- Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage due to Financial Default of an airline, cruise line, or tour operator.

I Panicked When I Discovered
I panicked when I discovered the Travel Insurance I had through Expedia had expired when I changed my flight reservation.
When I went to renew I was told I couldn’t.
I discovered Aardvark on my AARP site and I was excited I could purchase an even better travel plan with cover starting with my trip departure, at a cost I could afford.
I was confused with the initial site and Mr. Breeze reached out to me for clarification.
He explained the policy more thoroughly and addressed all my concerns, can’t get any better than that!
Thank You Aardvark and thank you Jonathan for your assistance.
I can go on my trip now knowing I’ll be covered for medical emergencies and then some.
Good Choices, Well Explained
I liked the way insurance was explained. I had read an article your company had written explaining Expedia trip cover versus other choices.
I used this advice to make the best choice for me and my traveling companions. That choice was to take a policy that provided much better medical and evacuation primary care.
Your site allowed comparisons, and I think I got the best value for my money. I don’t like constant follow up emails, though. You could back off a bit!!
